Dr. Zoltán Bejek Ph.D.
I grew up in a very close-knit family where the most important values I learned were love and respect for each other. I learned the power of selfless love from my mother, while my father, a mechanical engineer, instilled in me an interest in mechanics.
Even as a child, I was interested in how things worked. It was in primary school that I decided I wanted to be a doctor and from then on I consciously prepared myself for this career. My family and I spent three years in Cuba, where I got to know better how different people can be, and I learned that there are places in the world where togetherness is vital in everyday life. I started my medical studies in Cuba and finished them in Budapest.
My fascination with mechanics led me to a field where mechanics and biomechanics play a central role: orthopedics. As a fourth-year undergraduate, I did scientific research at the University Orthopaedic Clinic, where I have been working since 1997.
Since the beginning of my work, I have worked in departments where endoprosthetics was the main profile, so I had the opportunity to learn all the details. I am currently in charge of the endoprosthetics department at the institute, but I have also worked in spine and foot surgery departments. My main areas of expertise include total joint arthroplasty, revision surgery, arthroscopic surgery, ligamentoplasty and foot surgery.
As an academic, the three main pillars of my work are medicine, research and education. In addition to my medical work, I also do research. One of the results of this is the implantation of knee joint prostheses using minimally invasive techniques and computer navigation, and the biomechanical analysis of these methods, for which I obtained a Ph.D. degree.
As an instructor, I teach orthopedics to medical students in Hungarian and English, and I am also involved in postgraduate and continuing education programs.
Since 1998 I have been working with disabled athletes, a specialised and challenging field.Since 2000 I have been the team doctor of the Hungarian Paralympic Team and I regularly participate in Paralympic competitions, where I treat the athletes' musculoskeletal problems. I am also a member of the International Paralympic Committee.
My hobbies are enjoying life: I like swimming, travelling, and I am passionate about two-wheeled vehicles (bicycles and motorcycles) and modeling.
"I believe that if one wants to heal well, one must first learn to listen, to understand one's fellow human being, to see the disease and the person at the same time. Once we do that, we 'just' need to apply our knowledge in the right way."
