Hematology

Hematology Hematology is a branch of medicine dedicated to studying the health and diseases related to blood, blood-forming organs, and blood diseases. This specialty is vital for diagnosing and treating various conditions such as anemia, clotting disorders, leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle-cell disease among others.

Our Hematology Services

Our Hematology Department is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a skilled team of specialists to provide you with the best care. A hematology consultation typically begins with a detailed discussion about your medical history, followed by a physical examination. Depending on your situation, your hematologist may recommend specific tests such as blood tests, bone marrow aspiration or biopsy, flow cytometry, or genetic testing. These tests are used to determine the cause of your symptoms and to formulate the most effective treatment plan.

What is Thrombophilia?

Thrombophilia is a condition where the blood has an increased tendency to form clots. These clots can block blood vessels and cause serious health issues such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or stroke. If you're diagnosed with thrombophilia, our hematologists are here to provide you with comprehensive care, which includes treatment to reduce the risk of clot formation, regular monitoring, and guidance on lifestyle modifications.

When should you turn to us in case of thrombophilia?

In the case of acquired thrombophilia

Numerous diseases and conditions can trigger thrombophilia:

  • Heart failure
  • Acute and chronic inflammation
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Lower limb venous insufficiency
  • Diseases causing partial paralysis
  • Overweight
  • Certain forms of cancer therapy
  • Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy used in menopause.

There are also factors that temporarily increase the risk of thrombosis:

  • Pregnancy
  • Increased tendency for thrombosis after surgery
  • Long-term immobility in several diseases, traumas, or post-surgical conditions

In the case of inherited thrombophilia

We might suspect its presence if:

  • Thrombosis develops at a young age (usually before the age of 50)
  • Thrombosis develops in an unusual place
  • Thrombosis occurs multiple times
  • Thrombosis develops and there is a known thrombophilic in the family
  • Unexplained, so-called habitual (recurring) miscarriages have occurred
  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE) develops during pregnancy

Screening for thrombophilia may be warranted in symptom-free individuals if:

  • There is inherited thrombophilia among first-degree relatives
  • If a high-risk intervention is planned and the necessity or extent of prevention is influenced by the result

Women who have already had thrombosis should seek the help of a specialist even before planning pregnancy.

Screening for thrombophilia:

The essence of thrombophilia (increased tendency for thrombosis) examination is to identify all the factors that may play a role in the development or recurrence of thrombosis. This should always be individualized and mostly involve a thorough review of diseases, events, and life situations that predispose to the development of thrombosis.

Laboratory examination of known inherited and acquired coagulation abnormalities may also be part of the thrombophilia examination under certain circumstances.

Medication treatment of thrombophilia:

The treatment of thrombophilia requires careful consideration, during which the specialist weighs the medical history, possible risks, and decides accordingly what treatment the patient should receive, or whether there is a need for medication at all. Hematologists with extensive experience in thrombophilia have the most experience in this. Feel free to turn to them!
