Gastric tube surgery at the Duna Medical Center

The gastric ring, which was often used in the past to treat obesity, is now very rarely used due to complications and weight gain. Learn about one of the latest surgical techniques, during which a "tube stomach" is created!

The surgical treatment of obesity - bariatric surgery - is a rapidly expanding branch of surgery. One of the reasons for this is that obesity is almost epidemic in the developed world, and another is that when traditional treatments such as weight loss and drug therapy fail, surgery can be an effective solution.

The primary purpose of the operation is not aesthetic: in addition to the weight loss following the operation, the condition of many diseases that are common among overweight patients improves and in many cases is cured. Examples include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood fat levels, sleep apnea, infertility or joint wear and tear. Losing weight significantly reduces the likelihood of developing many tumors and improves self-esteem and self-confidence. Overall, patients who undergo surgery live longer and healthier lives.

The two most commonly used types of surgery are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. These surgeries are performed laparoscopically, with instruments inserted into the abdominal cavity through small incisions. The gastric ring, which was often used in the past, has now been relegated to the periphery due to the high rate of weight gain and frequent complications.

The moment of cutting the stomach

At the Duna Medical Center, we recently performed the first laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (tube stomach training). It is the most commonly used surgical solution in the USA, Canada and Asia, and is rapidly replacing other solutions in the rest of the world. The reason for its popularity and the choice of our doctors was that its effectiveness is close to bypassing the stomach, and the complications are significantly lower, such as suture failure, internal hernia, hair loss, osteoporosis, iron deficiency, anemia, and the risk of vitamin deficiency.

The operation was successful: the cut out part of the stomach was in the surgeon's hands

The essence of gastric bypass surgery is to remove approximately 85% of the stomach, leaving only a narrow "tube". In this way, the patient can only eat a smaller amount of food, because it causes a feeling of fullness quickly and for a longer time, but at the same time, he does not feel hungry, because the cells that produce the "hunger hormone" (ghrelin) are also removed with the removed part of the stomach.

In the case of our patient, in addition to obesity, he also had mild diabetes and previously suffered from cancer. The operation was performed through one 2.5 cm, one 1.5 cm and two 5 mm abdominal wall incisions. In accordance with the innovative spirit of the Duna Medical Center, we were the first in the country to use a special sizing probe called Gastrisail, which enabled more precise design and safer surgery. After the successful operation, our patient can expect to lose 60% of his excess weight, in addition to the elimination of his mild diabetes and a reduction in his tumor risk.
