On the water's edge, painlessly

2020-07-10
Everyone dreams of a vacation by the water, but no one wants an ear infection to spoil their well-deserved vacation. Unfortunately, it often happens with children that their ears hurt in the evening after a hearty bath, this can be easily prevented, but can even be treated quickly. Dr. Imre Gerlinger, otolaryngologist at the Duna Medical Center, tells us how.
On the water's edge, painlessly

What causes ear infections?

Our ear canal is a tube approximately 2.5-3 cm long, the part of which in front of the eardrum expands, and unfortunately, water easily gets trapped there. The water soaks the aforementioned part, and fungi easily multiply in the humid, dark environment. This is followed by itching and scratching of the ear, which usually only harms the ear, as it is easy to damage the ear canal, which then becomes inflamed.

The first symptom of ear inflammation is pain, and there may also be discharge from the ear canal, but hearing loss may also occur.

What should we do and what should we not do?

  • Be careful not to get water in the ear canal.
  • Do not pick your ears with a cotton swab!
  • Always dry your ears thoroughly after bathing!
  • Use earplugs, especially if you know your ears are sensitive!
  • Take boric acid drops with you, as these dry out the ear and are available without a prescription!
  • Wear a swimming cap!
  • If the symptoms persist, consult a doctor!

What else should we pay attention to at the beach?

At the beach, it is not only water in the ears that can cause problems, but also various allergies. These can be caused by insect bites, but also by pollen in the air and, at the end of summer, by ragweed. Few people know that, for example, a cross-reaction can develop between melons and ragweed, which can cause serious allergic symptoms. Therefore, anyone who goes to the beach or outdoors and knows that they are sensitive to something must take antihistamines (for allergies) and steroid ampoules with them. However, be wary of excessive and prolonged use of nasal drops, as this will only worsen your nasal congestion.

Mom, something got in my ear!

Unfortunately, if you go to the beach, you will encounter insects. If a bug accidentally gets into your ear, you can fill the ear canal with clean water for 5-6 minutes, but of course, you will need to remove the water afterwards. If necessary, you can also use boric acid ear drops.
