Congenital spinal muscular atrophy (SMA-Spinal Muscular Atrophy) is an inherited disease that affects one in 8,000-10,000 newborns. The motor neurons in the spinal cord of a patient suffering from SMA die, which leads to weakening of muscle movements or gradually worsening muscle atrophy.

This disease is unrecognizable at birth, but at the age of a few months, the lack of movement development and the decrease in muscle strength draw attention to it.
The essence of newborn screening lies precisely in the recognition of the disease before the appearance of clinical symptoms, and the treatment can be started already in infancy, in a symptom-free state.

In our country, 12-15 children are born with SMA every year, for whom early diagnosis and treatment can save their lives. The test does not mean additional blood sampling or inconvenience for your newborn child, because a part of the blood sample taken for screening for mandatory metabolic diseases is used.

The earlier the disease is recognized, the greater the chance of recovery and saving healthy cells.
