The devil wears stilettos

2018-10-16
Hammer toe is one of the most common, but undeservedly under-mentioned foot diseases, even though it can not only cause serious problems when walking, but it is also not good for our spine in the long term. Zsolt Hegedüs, the orthopedist at the Duna Medical Center, explains what we can do if we notice pain in our toes.

What happens in our shoes?

The disease, as with most orthopedic foot problems, can be blamed on inappropriate shoes that put the toes in an unnatural position, such as shoes with very high heels or very narrow toes. The essence of hammer toe is that the balance of the flexor and extensor muscles of the toe is upset, the middle part sinks, and the so-called base nail stands out, and the toe takes on a strange, hammer shape. The pain most often occurs in the second or third finger, and is often associated with the familiar cam.

If the trouble has already happened...

A toe that is sensitive to pressure, swollen and rubbing against shoes and other toes can cause serious pain while walking, but there may also be exudation on the skin, in which case, unfortunately, none of the shoes are comfortable anymore and intervention is required. Pillows and supports placed between the different toes can provide relief for a while, as they help prevent the protruding joint from rubbing against the footwear and thus not causing soft tissue inflammation or complaints.

If every step is agony

If the hammer toe is already causing severe pain, there is still a solution, there is a 10-15 minute operation with local anesthesia to correct the deformed finger. In this case, a metal wire is inserted to stiffen the joint, which is painlessly removed after 4-6 weeks. If only the bones at the end of the joint are shaped so that they do not protrude, then recovery may be shorter. You need to rest your feet for 1-2 weeks, of course it is important to take care of the shoes you choose afterwards!
