What do you need to know about hip and knee replacement surgeries?

The new "component" - about prostheses

We know that the prostheses used at Duna Medical Center stand the test in the long term: they are already used by more than 100,000 patients around the world. Based on one of the world's best, internationally recognized prosthesis registers, they are also among the best, with a so-called 10A* rating (ODEP rating). This means that after at least 10 years of long-term follow-up, these types have the lowest chance of having to replace the prosthesis prematurely - due to the implants. We are happy to provide our patients with further information about prostheses.

Fixing method: with or without cement

Our orthopedic specialists recommend one of these two methods to their patients, depending on their bone structure. If the bone quality is good, we can use cementless implants, which have a specially trained surface, so that the body will fix the prostheses to the bone, no "cement" is needed. If the bone stock is no longer in good condition, cement is used to fix it. Of course, we are talking about a special binder here, which is applied to the bone surfaces using the most modern technique after the proper mixing of powder and liquid components, promoting the best fixation and thereby increasing the "lifetime" of the prosthetic surgery, enhancing its results. The cement is mixed under vacuum and introduced into the cavity of the femur with a cement gun designed for this purpose, and then excess pressure is applied to fix the bone cement to the bone and the prosthesis to the bone cement as well as possible. This so-called 3rd generation cementation technique is currently only routinely available in a few Hungarian medical institutions.

About the surgery

Prosthetic surgeries are preceded by a thorough examination. Surgeries, which are considered routine interventions, take 50-75 minutes. The surgery is usually performed under anesthesia near the spine, in our special operating room designed for orthopedic surgeries. Before each operation, the surgical team reads and uses the WHO surgical checklist, which has been proven worldwide to increase safe patient care. The patient receives adequate, detailed information about what happens during the intervention and this significantly reduces the stress associated with the operation.

During and after surgery, we pay special attention to bleeding and pain relief. Thanks to modern surgical techniques and careful and up-to-date pain relief, the chance of a patient needing a blood transfusion is less than 1% at the Duna Medical Center. Thanks to modern pain relief techniques, rapid mobilization and rehabilitation are easily achieved. By avoiding the use of narcotic pain relievers, we reduce the side effects they often cause after surgery, thus promoting the earliest possible mobilization.

No plastic tube (drain) remains in the joint, and the surgical wound is covered with a special bandage developed for this purpose. They also serve to ensure early mobilization, less blood loss and minimize the occurrence of infection.

After surgery, our patients are transferred to a sub-intensive care room, and from there to one of our special rooms designed for orthopedic patients.
